Lyon is devided into several parts. The city centre is
on the Presquile, a thin peninsula bounded by the two rivers the Rhone and SaoneCroix
Rousse is the eleveated area north of Place des Terreaux. Place Bellecour is
1km south of here and 1km north of Place Carnot. This is next to the Gare de
perrache. The other train station is 2km east of the Presquile in the modern
commercial district La Part-Dieu. The old city Vieux Lyon is on the west bank
of the Saone River.
CHURCHES
Cathedrale Saint Jean (Vieux Lyon)
This mainly Romanesque 12th century church has a Gothic facade and a 14th century
clock.
MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
Musee Gallo-Romain (Fourviere)
Roman history at 17 Rue Cleberg. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Two Roman theatres
next to the museum are used for concerts in June.
Musee Gadagne (Vieux Lyon)
12 Rue de Gadagne. There are two sections featuring puppets and the history of
Lyon. Both are closed Tuesday. Cost?
Musee Historique des Tissus (Textiles Museum) (Presqu'ile)
A collection includes silks and fabrics from around the world. 34 Rue de la Charitè.
The ticket is also valid for the Musee des Arts Decoratifs nearby at no. 30
Musee des Arts Decoratifs (Presqu'ile)
The ticket to the Musee Historique des Tissus is also valid here. 30 Rue de la
Charite.
Musee de l'Imprimerie (Presqu'ile)
This museum contains the history of printing. 13 Rue de la Poulaillerie Closed
Monday and Tuesday.
Musee des Beaux-Arts (Presqu'ile)
Houses sculptures and paintings from every period of European art. Closed Monday
and Tuesday. Cost?
Institut Lumiere
The work of the motion picture pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumiere are exhibited
here. Closed Monday. On summer evenings films are screened free in front of the
institute. 25 Rue du Premier-Film.
MARKETS
Outdoor food market
This market is held every morning on Quai Saint Antoine. Fresh fruit, olives,
cheese and bread are sold.
Halle de la Martiniere
This covered market is in the northern Presquile, 24 Rue de la Martinere, open
6.30am to 12.30pm and 4 to 7.30pm. Closed Sunday afternoon and Monday.
OTHER
Vieux Lyon
This the old city of Lyon. It has narrow streets with medieval and Renaissance
houses. The most interesting buildings line Rue du Boeuf, Rue Juiverie, Rue des
Trois Maries and Rue Saint Jean.
Fourviere
The Romans originally built the city of Lugdunum on the slopes of this hill.
Today it is topped by the Tour Metallique and offers great views over the city
and the rivers. It is possible to walk up the hill but there is also a funicular
railway from Place Edouard Commette in Vieux Lyon. It operates daily to 10pm.
Bus/metro tickets are valid on the funicular or purchase a special return ticket.
