Tour de France

24/04/2005
We've been receiving quite a lot of queries about the Tour de France so it seems like a good idea to give a few clues here.

Accommodation
This will certainly require some effort and patience. The best way to ensure a bed is to reserve all your accommodation in advance. But make sure you arrive on time as your room may be given away! This can be an impossibility as traffic jams can delay you for hours. Alternatively book the first night and try to find the rest from day to day. There are B&Bs, Gites, hostels and camping sites along the route. Camping is probably one of the best options. Bring a sleeping bag, as you may get stranded, and there will be plenty of other people on the route.

Generally it's acceptable to camp anywhere along the route and it's often free. Be considerate and clear up after yourself. And be prepared for any weather.

If you want to book ahead remember we have a booking engine on every page of our site. Feel free to email us at editor@backpackglobe.com if you get stuck. Check these useful links below for some ideas.

Transport Driving to each stage can be difficult. There are huge delays, the maps are hard to follow, parking will be a nightmare, and a knowledge of French helps! However the benefit of your own vehicle is that you are free to leave when you want, always have somewhere to crash, you can store food to journey with you. Bring some music and enjoy yourself.

People do come and ride in France during this time, even following the route themselves. It may be adviseable to do this the day after the tour has passed through.

If you are training or busing around France read our transport pages for details. The French rail system is excellent but you may need to book your tickets in advance. Go to the SNCF site for information.
